Mini Interview with Author Michelle Smith

Today I have the great pleasure of interviewing author and fellow book bunny Michelle Smith about her new book KINGDOM COME, released today. Welcome to the blog Michelle!

Q: What inspired you to write Kingdom Come?

A: A cloud. No, seriously. My son and I were playing outside one afternoon, and I looked up and saw storm clouds rolling in. I told him, "We need to head inside. There's a storm coming." And with that line, a swarm of plot ideas poured into my head. The (very rough) outline of Kingdom Come was born that night.

I'd been reading a string of dystopian novels, and I couldn't help but wonder how those worlds came about.

Q: Describe each of your main characters in one sentence.

A: Kerrigan: Kerrigan is a girl who whole-heartedly believes that humanity is inherently good, and will do whatever it takes to preserve that light in the world.

Ethan: A guy who's been beaten and pushed to the side throughout his life, Ethan takes the leadership role of our little group, and strives to keep things moving forward even when all hope seems lost.

Bennett: Though Kerrigan sees Bennett as a power-hungry sociopath, our villain truly believes he's doing the world a service by wiping it clean and starting anew, with him at the helm.

Q: You self-published your book. What was the hardest part of the process?

A: The hardest part is having everything fall on my shoulders. I've had awesome critique partners/readers, editors, a cover designer, and plenty of support. At the end of the day, though, it's all on me. And while I love being able to be so hands-on, it is a little terrifying.

Q: What is your favorite book?

A: I have so many! The Harry Potter series is definitely at the top (Order of the Phoenix being first). The Fault in Our Stars by John Green is a book I'll rec for the rest of my life. Shadow and Bone by Leigh Bardugo was amazing, as well as the Shatter Me series by Tahereh Mafi.

Q: What's next for you?

A: I just completed a YA Contemporary that I'm in LOVE with. I'm hoping to start a spin-off novel from that soon.

The world is coming to an end, and "Crazy Kerrigan" has a front-row seat.

Centuries ago, scrolls calling forth the four horsemen of the apocalypse were discovered, sealed until their rightful heirs were born. Now, those scrolls are being opened.

When her small town crumbles during her stay in an institution for troubled teens, eighteen-year-old Kerrigan Monroe is one of the few left standing. She and a handful of other survivors take cover as everything they've ever known is reduced to rubble. When the smooth voice behind a cryptic radio broadcast beckons her to a safe house, she and the others abandon their temporary haven, and embark on a cross-country journey toward refuge.

Upon discovering the identity of the man behind the voice, Kerrigan is smacked with the revelation that he's not the only heir to these scrolls. Now, she must make a choice: join this dark stranger and lead the New World by his side, or fight for what's left of humanity.

Either decision will bring power. Either decision will bring death.

About Michelle Smith

Michelle's a lover of love and all things happy. She laughs way too much (sometimes at things that aren’t even funny), is a complete sap, and will try to convince you that Harry Potter isn’t just a book series, but a way of life.

While studying at East Carolina University, a brown-eyed boy stole her heart. She now lives in North Carolina with the devilishly handsome boy-turned-Coastie, their son (who inherited her creative streak), and crazy border collie mix.
