Using photos to plan my WIP
One of my favorite pre-writing activities is finding photos to inspire my writing, especially the physical descriptions of my guys and the setting.
Just like every author, I get very attached to the characters in my stories. I spend a lot of time creating histories and profiles for each one, documenting the men who inhabit my brain. For my new WIP, Nancy Boy, I was having trouble figuring out how the guys look. I started with a photo of a couple added characteristics of two other men to develop final descriptions of each character.
And poor Marc. He's on his third name. I think he may get to keep this one.
In addition to character pictures, I like to find pictures to help me visualize settings. A very important location for Nancy Boy is the kitchen of Travis' parents' house. When looking for setting pictures, online real estate websites are your friend. I searched for houses in Charleston, South Carolina that were around $1million (Travis' parents are loaded), and I found a house with the perfect kitchen.
I'm completely jealous of anyone, fictional or otherwise, who has that kitchen ;)
Now the hard part: writing about all this loveliness :)
